Socratic Seminar

The  Socratic seminar  is a formal discussion, based on a text, in which the leader asks open-ended questions. Within the context of the discussion, students listen closely to the comments of others, thinking critically for themselves, and articulate their own thoughts and their responses to the thoughts of others. Inner - Outer circle activity This was a fun way to teach and see your students learning. It was pretty intimidating though. I think that some students would find this way of learning to be a little intimidating because everyone feels like you need to speak. Awkward silences could be a down fall.

WebQuest

Image
A  WebQuest  is an inquiry-oriented lesson format in which most or all the information that learners work with comes from the web. These can be created using various programs, including a simple word processing document that includes links to websites. The Introduction  orients students and captures their interest. The Task  describes the activity's end product. The Process  explains strategies students should use to complete the task. The Resources  are the Web sites students will use to complete the task. The Evaluation  measures the results of the activity. The Conclusion  sums up the activity and encourages students to reflect on its process and results. I honestly didn't love the format in which we did this for our tech class. It was wayyy to confusing and too many tools were required. I would use a maximum of 3 tools in a webquest. It would be a really fun way to learn though. The formant for google cites works best.

Concept Attainment and Development

Image
Concept Attainment -  is an indirect instructional strategy that uses a structured inquiry process. It is based on the work of Jerome Bruner. In  concept attainment , students figure out the attributes of a group or category that has already been formed by the  teacher .  It can be thought of as a game of "find the rule".  Concept Development -   The  Concept  is the big idea or generalization contained in the Learning Objective. In  Concept Development , you explicitly  teach  the students the  concept , what it is, the generalization, the big idea. The  Concept  includes a written, bulletproof definition, along with examples and non-examples (if applicable). I think this is also a beneficial way of teaching because it is structured inquiry to help the students determine the attributes of something the teacher has formed. For example students can observe teacher given examples to gain a basic knowledge and...

Cause and Effect

What is it? It is an attempt to understand why things happen. Many professions spend countless hours trying to understand the cause and effect of human and natural behavior.  Why is it important? A goal of education is to create empowered, analytic thinkers, capable of thinking through complex processes to make important decisions. Students are affected by cause and effect relationships everyday.  How can you make it happen? https://www.teachervision.com/cause-effect-lesson Always ask why. Why did the fish in the classroom aquarium die? Why were slaves more important in the South than in the North? Why do people continue to commit crimes after being released from prison? What are the causes and effects of bullying in schools? After students answer the Why questions, ask them, "How do you know? What is your evidence?" Have students find research or texts to justify their position. Encourage students to consider multiple causes of events. Make lists of possible c...

Popplet 5 E's

This is my understanding of the 5 E's teaching style. 5 E's Popplet I really like inquiry. I love that it is essentially student lead. They are coming up with questions. They are searching for answers on their own leading to their own discoveries.

Direct Instruction and Multiple Intelligence

Image
I found this so interesting, I thought that there was more of a promotion to teach different learning styles. I really like when it talked about using multiple ways of teaching to hold the students' attention. Obviously you learn better when you pay closer attention. If the lesson takes a turn or two the students are going to be paying attention to see what we do next. I didn't know that our brains retained information better with long term education. So block classes are no good. The fall backs I see of Direct Instruction is It categorized and groups children and their abilities. It uses more assessments and assessment based questions. Teachers lessons are also normally scripted or has a specific flow it needs to follow, so then the teacher will not be able to branch out to other related topics as well.  Ive seen many positive and negative aspects and opinions on Direct Instruction. So I think it is important to have a good balance of direct instruction and also othe...
