Animoto-Stars

Stars
6th Grade Science Standard 4: Students will understand the scale of size, distance between objects, movement, and apparent motion (due to Earth's rotation) of objects in the universe and how cultures have understood, related to, and used these objects in the night sky.
Ed. Tech Standard 4: Use general purpose productivity tools and peripherals to support personal productivity, to remediate skill deficits, and to facilitate learning through the curriculum.

I created this Animoto on stars to teach my students how fun and interesting stars are. As I show this in class I will also describe things that I could not put in the video. For example my first slide is a picture of the milky way. Many students have seen pictures of the milky way but in some cases they don't know what it is. I will go on to describe the Milky Way and what its composed of. My other Animoto videos will help me with that as well. Then, going on in my slides I come to a picture of the North Star, the north star always points north and is sometime used as a compass for some people. The North Star is also on the handle of the little dipper. Some interesting facts about stars that I could tell my students are things like: Many individuals purchases stars and name them after people they know. Stars are not fire flies up in the sky, they are massive balls of plasma that are held together by gravity. The light from stars takes millions of years to reach earth, therefore when you look at the stars you are literally looking back in time. Also stars are usually between 1 and 10 billion years old. Historically, stars are very important and they meant a lot to many different kinds of people.

Stars and science are very important, and also very fun to learn about. I want my students to understand that many different people sacrificed a lot of their time and life to help us understand the night sky. Those individuals really had to dedicate their time and lives to science. Learning and understanding science will really help my students appreciate and acknowledge what those important individuals did.
